Can you use automotive start batteries for deep cycle purposes? Customers have often come to us and said that they have used N150 start batteries for their boat or motor home lighting and have used them for more than 2 years. The reason why they can do this is because these start batteries batteries were never discharge below 20%.
Deep cycle batteries are made for deep discharge – up to 50% ie down to about 11.3 volts. The plates are thicker and are often rated for around 300 DOD cycles. Start batteries may only handle about 50 DOD cycles.
Savings achived in using restored deep cycle batteries are significant. For example a 95 ah gel new cost approximately $600. A similar restored battery sells for $125.
Marine Deep Cycle
Our marine deep cycle restored and reconditioned batteries are tested by
subjecting them to a full capacity discharge. This will ensure that they have enough
capacity to perform to expectation..
AGM (VRLA batteries)
Most of these batteries have been in service with the telcos as backup battery bank.
Although capable of being cycled of up to 300 times DOD they are hardlly ever cycled.
This makes them ideal and like new when used as deep cycle batteries.
They are designed for used in confined areas and so are perfect for mobile homes
and marine use where spillage and acid fumes poses health risk.

Storage Batteries
Battery banks are the most expensive part of a renewal energy system. Yet they are also the most vulnerable. Undercharge and sulphation sets in quickly. Overcharge and they dry out. Over discharge and their capacity diminishes quickly shortening their useful life.
A restored and reconditioned battery bank may cost a tenth ofthe price of a new battery bank and yet works just as well.
